Lauren Smith: Tell us about your book(s). They are part of a series, is that right?

Rebecca Benston: My books, In the Wash and Under Lock and Key are part of a mystery series which centers around private detective, Rona Shively. She's a sassy, smart-mouthed PI who often takes cases that other PI's wouldn't touch. She's not afraid to speak her mind and she's also learning a lot about herself these days as she tries to maintain new relationships alongside solving cases.

Lauren Smith: Tell us about your main character. How hard is it to keep Rona fresh and interesting?

Rebecca Benston: It's actually pretty easy to keep her up to date. Though I often include obscure references to things such as classic television and movies, I also try to infuse the storyline with some of what's happening in today's world. A better example of this will come in the third book, however, the characters in this series are experiencing modern day woes such as lack of money, cheating spouses, murderous acquaintances, greed, and even a few identity issues.

Lauren Smith: Have you always wanted to write in this genre?

Rebecca Benston: I have. I love reading mysteries and I've always been a fan of this type of work. I enjoy coming up with storylines that are a little offbeat and hope that readers will enjoy what I've come up with.

Lauren Smith: Where do you get your inspiration from?

Rebecca Benston: I often get inspiration from things I've read, but I also find myself wondering about stories I hear on the news. Sometimes they talk about things that start me thinking, "How could that be?" Once that happens, a story starts to play out in my head. Sometimes, it makes it onto paper. In addition to that, I'm a huge mystery fan.  From yesterday's Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys to today's Stephanie Plum and Kinsey Millhone stories, I love mysteries and sometimes get tired of waiting for the next one. In my impatience, I often start to weave my own if for nothing else, entertainment.

Lauren Smith: What about the publishing process has surprised you the most?

Rebecca Benston: What has surprised me was the amount of work that goes into promoting books seems to be much more than what I anticipated. For a long time, I thought that the writing of the book would be the most difficult aspect. As it turns out, getting the word out about your books is much more difficult. Luckily, I love a challenge.

Lauren Smith: What's next for you?

Rebecca Benston: Currently, I'm working on the third book in the Rona Shively series.  I'm also still promoting my Amazon Short, Hearts and Flowers. It's a short romance that's available for $.49 per download. I'm also working on a non-fiction book about women's self-esteem issues. That project will probably take a while. There's a lot of research involved and I really want this to be a useful guidebook for women of all ages. For more information about my projects, please visit my website at http://www.rebeccabenstonwrites.com and also http://www.2higherground.ning.com for the non-fiction project.
