Little Pink Slips is like fun and delicious, like eating a whole chocolate cake without the guilt.
Former McCall's editor-in-chief Sally Koslow features a delightfully likeable character Magnolia Gold, who gets removed from her position as editor-in-chief of Lady magazine when the not-so-socially-inappropriate Bebe Blake is asked to take over. The magazine is trying to create an Oprah-esq publication putting Bebe on each cover. Bebe reminded me a bit of Rosie O'Donnell with her on-her-mind-out-of-her-mouth type of behavior and it’s curious to note that Rosie assumed Koslow's duties at McCall's once it was relaunched as Rosie.
As Bebe works to destroy a perfectly good magazine with her horrible covers (one done in her bicycle shorts, some people should not wear spandex….) Magnolia tries to orchestrate her return. I found myself laughing out loud and rooting for Magnolia who is insecure, slightly imperfect and 100% likeable.
Koslow's glimpse at magazine life “behind-the-scenes” is insightful and entertaining and made this reviewer glad she never got that job at Cosmo. Just once though, I would have loved to be a part of the exclusive Channel sale the book opens with. Ah, well, a girl can dream, right? Don’t miss Little Pink Slips, you’ll be sorry you did.
